Are you a part of the recent cable cutter movement? Have you ditched your satellite service in favor of Boxee, an HTPC, or an Apple TV? Well if so, this series of Apple TV tutorials is definitely for you!

Eventually, I’m going to show you how to watch Amazon VOD, Hulu, and yes, even live ESPN games on your Apple TV 2. The first step in accomplishing this feat is to, yep, you guessed it, jailbreak your Apple TV.

Folks, it really can’t get any easier than this tutorial. In it, I show you how to untether jailbreak your Apple TV 2 with Seas0nPass. Check inside for the full step-by-step video tutorial…

Make sure you watch the video in full screen mode so that you can see the desktop clearly.

For those of you who can’t watch the video, here is a brief synopsis of the steps it takes to jailbreak your Apple TV 2.

How to Jailbreak Your Apple TV 2 With Seas0nPass Untethered

Step 1: Purchase a USB Micro Cable (Note: this is different from your typical USB-Mini cable).

Step 2: Unplug your HDMI and power cable from the Apple TV 2, and hook up the Apple TV to your Mac or PC using the USB Micro cable.

Step 3: Download and run Seas0nPass for the Mac or PC.

Step 4: When prompted, put your Apple TV into DFU mode by holding Menu and Play simultaneously on your remote for 7 seconds.

Step 5: Watch as Seas0nPass jailbreaks your Apple TV. That’s it, you’re done.

Be sure to look out for our next tutorial that shows you how to install FireCore’s aTV Flash Black on your Apple TV. This will allow you to easily install apps, and brings us one step closer to watching live ESPN, Hulu, etc.

Just get a regular fucking TV…

    • What are you talking about? It is a regular tv.

    • nope

lol WHOOOOSH – this person has no idea what they’re talking about lolol

  • Na

I’m not a Hulu or amazon on demand user, so my opinion may be biased. I jailbroke a few months back and was extremly disappointed. The system becomes unstable, crashes during streaming, and a few other little annoyances. I restored, and you Probably will too.

    • It’s not unstable for me at all. It works just as if I was stock. I’ve put it through its paces. Of course it’s not the fastest system in the world, but it works well.

    • Dan

Ditto here. I’ve had to re-jailbreak several times after it started crashing and getting stuck in continuous reboot while playing around with weather and rss feeds. It’s ok if I ignore these apps but when I’m streaming via XBMC it still crashes frequently causing me to have to restart the movie I was watching. Royally frustrating. I’m ditching the apple tv. Thankfully I didn’t have to pay for it.

  • Revvxz

Regular service provider I meant. Ugh nvm -_-

    • Ah, I see. Well, a lot of folks don’t want to pay the $100+ a month fee for Cable TV/Sat. I know I’m one of them.

  • r0cket1000

This sounds interesting. Although I’m not a Hulu user, I can probably have Amazon VOD service as an alternative to iTunes. Are there any other cool features we can do with a jailbroken Apple TV? Devs should really hop on this and make good use of it. I never really had a purpose to JB my ATV.

  • What apps can u put on it?

    • My next video (uploading) showcases some of the apps. I’ll also add some addition info. But lots of stuff. Mainly movies and TV, but RSS, Browser, Weather, stuff like that. No games that i know of yet.

Some sport channels would be awesome. I cancel my cable just cause Netflix rocks.

    • ESPN3 is where its at. They show a LOT of sports throughout the season live. It’s going to be nice for football and bball.

      • Dane

There’s no NFL on espn3. Also if you don’t have a participating Internet provider you’re SOL like me. I have optimum from cabelvision and don’t get access to espn3.

And why not just get an xbox which comes stock w hulu Netflix and espn3 apps.

On a side note cable is way better than all 3 of those combined and I’d never paid for them

      • I don’t watch the NFL, it’s great for college ball though.

how come when you just plug in the usb it powers the apple2tv up
this dosent work on my pc Windows7. I have to plug in the power cable
also my apple2tv dosent show up in itunes I have the latest version of Itunes..

    • That’s bizarre. Maybe try another usb port.

      • Brian089

        done that 2

  • Are you using a BlackBerry cable?

    • Brian089

i dont know whats the how do i tell

    • Yes, haha….It’s from my BB Bold.

  • Keith

Can somebody give a brief description as to what apple tv2 actually is.. All new to me

    • Brian089

      look on

    • Mike

Rubbish is what they are imo, all they do is let you stream stuff. I’d much rather have a fully fledged media player that actually allows me to connect an external hard drive unlike the Apple TV .. Also, being from the UK, I do not need anything like this for streaming sport or movies etc, $100 plus a month for cable ?? WTF, it costs nothing like that here, America is such a big fat rip off tbh, the only thing you seem to get more for your money on in the US is the amount of food you get on your colossal plates lol

(No offence intended, just my opinion)

      • Dan

You’re obviously under the age of 16 – A full Sky Sports package is well beyond $100 a month. Sky World is more like £82 a month which is $130 a month.

When you reach the age of 20+ you’ll actually realise all us Brits are envious of the ridiculously cheap prices they have for everything in the US and how much we get ripped off on this island.

  • SEEL

    Not impressed.

  • SEEL

Mike at least my teeth look GREAT!

Maybe a trip to London to loot the entire city would be fun!? Great country ya got there!

    USA! USA! USA!

  • Soto

I’m using a blackberry cable and it’s not working so far. Does the BB usb cable isn’t supported here?

iTunes doesn’t seem to find my apple tv when I plug it in, or after I run season pass and DF mode. I tried DF mode before and after running season pass. Any suggestions?
    iTunes 10.4.1
    OSX 10.7.1

    • Did you make sure you don’t have the power connected. If the power is connected, you will have troubles.

  • Drew

i’ve ran the jailbreak and it appears to do it successfully, but when i run the aTV Flash, it says the device is not yet jailbroken… any ideas?

    • Something definitely went wrong with Seas0nPass. Try it again.

      • drew

Thanks…. I have re-tried multiple times. I have restored to factory via iTunes and done again… No joy. I have tried tethered and untethered.. Just incase… Also, no joy. I’m doing this on window 7, by the way. I would have given up if I had not already bought the ATF flash black.

        It’s getting most annoying…

  • Christopher Roberts

    Same as Dennis. Pls advise.

The Apple TV “Apple TV” could not be restored. This device is not eligilble for the requested build.

  • itunes won’t “see” the appleTV unless you unplug the power cord on the back of the appleTV. I don’t know why, but this made it work for me. I got the tip from the FireCore site’s instructions.

  • Ivan

Can I use a blackberry cable? When I plug in it does not blink as it does on the video. However, when I opened Itunes, the ATV2 gets recognized. Any suggestions?
