When you receive an iMessage or another alert or notification on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch that you are unable to check at the moment, your natural course of action is probably to ignore it. No big deal — you’ll check it later. Unfortunately, Apple has set alerts to repeat at two minute intervals by default on iOS devices.

As such, just a few minutes later, your device lights up, vibrates, or rings again to remind you of the notification a second time. The reason for this is because Apple sets notifications and alerts to repeat once by default on iOS devices. To me, this was incredibly annoying. Fortunately, there is an easy solution to disable this feature…

How to turn off double message alerts on iPhone

Step 1: Tap on the Settings icon from the Home screen.

iOS 7 settings icon

Steps 2 & 3: Tap on Notification. Scroll down and tap on Messages.

Stop repeating SMS ringtone

Steps 4 & 5: Scroll down and tap on Repeat Alerts. Tap on Never to disable double notifications. This will effectively prevent your iPhone from beeping twice when you get a message.

If you wish, you can configure alerts to repeat 3 times, 5 times or 10 times at two minute intervals from the same menu.

This is a really simple trick, and one that many iOS power users probably already knew about, but it will certainly come in handy for those who weren’t aware.

This post on how to disable double notifications is part of an ongoing series of iOS tips and tricks here at iDownloadBlog. If you have your own tips and tricks to share, be sure to do so in the comments section below.

I’m sure my wife doesn’t know this too lol

    • In anticipation of further comments like this: please understand that there are both novice and intermediate iOS users that read iDownloadBlog. It doesn’t take too much effort to ignore this article if it is about something that you are already knowledgeable about. We even inexplicably mention this in the article above.

We are going to be doing a series of these smaller iOS tips and tricks articles in the future as an extension of the “ultimate guides” that have been published, so please be prepared for this content. The articles will sometimes be simple tricks like this one, while others will be more elaborate tutorials.

The best thing you can do if you are as knowledgeable about iOS as you sound is provide your own suggestions for future articles of this type. Maybe there are some really advanced power user tricks that you can share, and we will certainly look into it and share it with the iDownloadBlog community as a whole if we feel it is worthwhile.

I work in IT, did programming growing up, built my own computer, rooted and flash my own custom version of Android, know how to use Powershell in Windows, know how to use Mac OS X, and have owned an iPhone for about 6 months now…

I couldn’t figure this out until right now when I looked it up. My wife owned an iPhone for 3 years now and never knew how to disable it either.

Lol is funny how this thing is useful for some and annoying to other, I use “twice” notification because is useful to me.

i think it really depends on if you are the kind of person that tends to be in areas or situations where you may not hear your phone right away but i think most people hear it the first time and after that just want to be able to rely on the “raise to wake” feature to just visually check their notifications.

  • Thanks

christ, it annoyed the HELL out of me. thanks for this simple write up. i am not a novice by any means, i knew this was out there but i could not for the life of me find the damn thing.

    • Same here! I kept looking in the Messages section of the setting, didn’t think it’d be in “Notifications” THEN “Messages.” My phone will annoy me so much less, now.

I should have googled this sooner, just didn’t get enough sms messages to care (mostly use facebook’s messenger app) But got a new friend who didn’t use facebook, so it annoyed the heck out of me!! Ok, nice of them to have this feature as an option for those..who…for some reason..wants this?.. O_o, but having it on repeat as standard is, honestly, STUPID!

  • Jonathan Strange

oh god thank you so much this was driving my ocd insaaaaaaaaaaaane!!

  • qudratol

Great work. The months long annoyance is gone. Thanks

  • Fede Gratti

I thought it was a bug, not a feature =P

  • CreativeHead

Hell, I thought my provider is stupid to send me notification twice. Why the hell company like apple would do this in the first place.
    Thanks a lot.
